Because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” Galatians 4.6
I love hearing the word, Daddy. I will never forget when my first two children said that to me. I am looking forward to our youngest saying it soon. What is amazing is the God of Heaven wants us to call Him that. Think about this. The creator, sustainer of all things, all-powerful, all-knowing and ever present God wants those who are His sons and daughters to call Him, Daddy. That’s right. Feeble, fragile and small humans, who are a speck on a speck in the universe get to call God by such a name. This is mind blowing.
F.F. Bruce describes Abba, as the voice of the Spirit of Jesus on the lips of His people. When we trust in Jesus the Holy Spirit literally takes residence in us. The Spirit of God becomes our seal of adoption so that we can refer to God in such an intimate way. Think about it. The same thing Jesus calls the Father is what we get to call Him. This is all possible because of the indwelling Spirit that we receive by faith.
What I love about this great relationship we have with our Father is how our Father acts toward us. Paul says to Timothy, Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord (Ephesians 6.4). Paul is speaking to earthly fathers, but we get a great glimpse into the heart of God in this verse. Just as Paul encourages fathers to not exasperate their children He does not exasperate those who are His sons and daughters. The word, exasperate means to be provoked to anger or to take the wind out. Think about it. God does not take the wind out of our sails instead He blows wind into our sails. He truly is the breath of life for his sons and daughters. He is not easily angered with us, but instead He loves us in spite of our failures. This is our God. He is a loving Father who holds us in His hands and no one can snatch us out of His sweet embrace (John 10.29).
I pray that you would embrace sonship and live as sons and daughters.
