Gone Astray

we are the sheep gone astray
on some mountainside wandering
we slip into the wrong cleft, faultering
alone, below, we’ve become our own fall, so
we listen for the voice we would know
if it found us along the way
you will carry us, you say

we are the coin, fallen away
dusty and dull in the corner waiting
for a drop of the tears you’re shedding
for a slip of the oil from your lamp
to unhide us, to shine us again
till we can reflect your rays
you will save us, you say

we are the next prodigal runaway
spoiling our inheritance of grace
for nothing but mudd from this place
as our stomachs churn, we decide its worth
the disgrace of return to see if you have more
of yourself to give away
you will welcome us, you say

carry us, save us, welcome us,
we pray
