Living in Purity (Psalm 119.9-16)

How can you and I live in purity?  How can our lives be pure?

God's Word tells us in Psalm 119.9-16 how one can keep his or her life pure.  The anwer is the word of God.  The word of God shows us what a pure life looks like and helps us maintain that life.  The word of God is God's truth and this is what God uses to sanctify His people (John 17.17).

So, what does the Psalmist say that we should do to have this life of purity?  First, we must keep or guard our life with the word of God (119.9).  Next, we should seek the Lord with all our heart and not wander from His commands (119.10).  So, we must be in the word of God and read it relationally, as we seek to know God more and more.

Then we are encouraged to internalize the word of God (119.11).  By hiding the word of God in our heart we will not sin, but instead live in purity.  We are to hear, read, study, memorize and meditate on the Word.  So the Psalmist encourages us to respond to the word of God in these ways.  Specifically we are told to rejoice (119.14), meditate (119.15) and delight (Psalm 119.16) in the Word.  Do you rejoice at the Scriptures?  We are to meditate.  Not just memorize, but to think of the word and practice it continually.  Do you delight in the Scriptures?  The Scriptures should be something we go to happily and find great joy in because we know they keep us living in purity.

Proverbs 16.20 says, He who gives attention to the word will find good, and blessed is he who trusts in the Lord.  We must read and listen to God's word.  When we do we will find great joy in the Lord as we grow in our faith in Him and rejoice at knowing God.  We will also be happy as we know and walk in His commands.

So, give much attention to the word of God, so that you will live in purity and live a life pleasing to God.  This is both for God's glory and your joy.
