Advent: The Name of Jesus
Speaker: Jerry Witham Series: Jesus, Fixing Our Eyes On Him Topic: Advent Passage: Isaiah 9:1–9:7
Isaiah 9.1-7: As we continue to fix our eyes on Jesus this Advent season we look back centuries before Jesus’ birth. The people of Israel rebelled against God. God had called them His chosen people. Yet they thought God to be cruel and unfair. God had given His people a land flowing with milk and honey. They thanked and worshipped others gods. So, 750 years before Jesus was born, God sent the prophet Isaiah to the children of Israel. Isaiah spoke strong words of condemnation to the people, but he also came to tell them that it didn’t have to be this way, giving them hope. Isaiah shared with the Israelites a great mystery, of One that was coming to save the Israelites from the darkness they had created for themselves. Though we like Israel have been disobedient, are at times lost in a desert and alone, we too can have hope because God has sent a Messiah. God has sent Jesus, the Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father and Prince of Peace. Today we look at the great name of Jesus and what that means to us.
