Freely Running the Race of Perseverance

Speaker: Jerry Witham Series: Live Free Topic: Freedom Passage: Hebrews 12:1–3

Hebrews 12.1-13: The Summer Olympics come around every four years and draws the attention of many. Often we are taken back for these few weeks by certain events that we otherwise rarely watch. One of the attractions is the track and field and specifically the running. As the runners run they run with a freedom that is jaw dropping, whether it be with long distance or the speed of a sprint. The writer of Hebrews uses the illustration of a race and running to speak of the Christian life. Important to the race that we as believers are called to live is the freedom from every weight that tries to trip us up, distract us or weigh us down, so that we are not effective in our witness or we throw in the towel all together and give up. So, the writer says we are to “lay aside” or “get rid of” every thing or sin that attempts to keep us from persevering in being disciples and making disciples. So, today we will look at weights in this life that try to knock us off track and be encouraged to persevere in freedom. To live free we must be free of the weights of this world.
