Bible Reading: Proverbs 5.7-14
Now then, my sons, listen to me And do not depart from the words of my mouth. Keep your way far from her And do not go near the door of her house, Or you will give your vigor to others And your years to the cruel one; And strangers will be filled with your strength And your hard-earned goods will go to the house of an alien; And you groan at your final end, When your flesh and your body are consumed; And you say, “How I have hated instruction! And my heart spurned reproof! “I have not listened to the voice of my teachers, Nor inclined my ear to my instructors! “I was almost in utter ruin In the midst of the assembly and congregation.” Proverbs 5.7-14
Temptation is all around us. Everywhere we turn the lure to sin is there, especially when it comes to sexual immorality. With the increase in technical advances there is the increase in the means to which we are tempted today. The apostle John described all that is in the world saying, “For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world” (1 John 2.16).
The previous verses in Proverbs 5 describe the powerful lure and seduction of the adulteress. We see this today and we see its devastating consequences here in today’s reading. Marriages, families, lives and Christian testimonies being destroyed. The price is so high that it is unreasonable. But we do not have to fall into the trap.
The answer to avoiding the adulteress snare is “not departing from wisdom” (v. 7, 13). Jesus says in a prayer to the Father, “Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth” (John 17.17). The word of God is true and wise. It sets us apart to live lives of holiness and purity. It sets us apart to live lives for God’s mission and glory. Obedience to God’s word keeps us from sinning (Psalm 119.9, 11).
God has set apart sex to be enjoyed between a husband and a wife. God created sex not only for reproduction but also for enjoyment, and He didn’t put the marriage wall around sex to rob us of pleasure but to increase pleasure and protect it (Wiersbe). When we step outside of God’s plan we experience great tragedy and miss out on God’s best for us.
If you are reading this today and you have fallen into the adulteress snare know that Jesus came because we are all sinners in need of a Savior. In John 8.1-11, Jesus shares a story of the beautiful grace of God. There is forgiveness and freedom found in God's grace.
