Bible Reading: Psalm 138

Psalm 138
I will give You thanks with all my heart;

I will sing praises to You before the gods.

I will bow down toward Your holy temple

And give thanks to Your name for Your lovingkindness and Your truth;

For You have magnified Your word according to all Your name.

On the day I called, You answered me;

You made me bold with strength in my soul.

All the kings of the earth will give thanks to You, O Lord,

When they have heard the words of Your mouth.

And they will sing of the ways of the Lord,

For great is the glory of the Lord.

For though the Lord is exalted,

Yet He regards the lowly,

But the haughty He knows from afar.

Though I walk in the midst of trouble, You will revive me;

You will stretch forth Your hand against the wrath of my enemies,

And Your right hand will save me.

The Lord will accomplish what concerns me;

Your lovingkindness, O Lord, is everlasting;

Do not forsake the works of Your hands.

We Americans love to find the best at everything, whether in sports, at work or entertainment.  Being the best requires having a God-given talent and working very hard over a long period of time.  It is rewarding to me when I hear those who have been recognized as the best at something give thanks to God.

Today’s passage is a reminder that we have been given a gift of grace and our response should be one of gratitude.  Revelation 21 tells us of the redeemed from all nations praising God and inhabiting His glory.  An old hymn, “All Hail the Power of Jesus Name” gives us another picture:

Oh, that with all the sacred throng
we at his feet may fall!
We'll join the everlasting song
and crown him Lord of all.
We'll join the everlasting song
and crown him Lord of all.

But grace is not just for eternity and we do not need to wait to praise God and crown Him LORD of all.  Let us live lives of gratitude in view of the gift of salvation, but also be thankful that Jesus answers our prayers, cares for us, gives us strength and protects us.

Because of that gift of grace we are ambassadors for a king who reigns forever.  Pray that God would magnify His word in your life today and that those around you would recognize that you have been with Jesus (Acts 4:13).
