Bible Reading: Psalm 98
O sing to the Lord a new song, For He has done wonderful things, His right hand and His holy arm have gained the victory for Him. 2 The Lord has made known His salvation; He has revealed His righteousness in the sight of the nations. 3 He has remembered His lovingkindness and His faithfulness to the house of Israel; All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. 4 Shout joyfully to the Lord, all the earth; Break forth and sing for joy and sing praises. 5 Sing praises to the Lord with the lyre, With the lyre and the sound of melody. 6 With trumpets and the sound of the horn Shout joyfully before the King, the Lord. 7 Let the sea roar and all it contains, The world and those who dwell in it. 8 Let the rivers clap their hands, Let the mountains sing together for joy 9 Before the Lord, for He is coming to judge the earth; He will judge the world with righteousness And the peoples with equity.
I love music. In my teen and college years I used to anticipate when certain albums would come out of artists that I liked and couldn’t wait to it. I would listen to the new songs on the cd over and over again when I got it. I would seek to get down the lyrics to the new songs so I could know every word. Knowing new songs for me was a big deal. Today, I still like when a new song comes, especially a new one by Andrew Peterson, David Crowder or Hillsong - just to name a few.
The psalmist encourages us to sing a new song to the Lord. I used to always be intrigued by this and was curious what it meant. Did he mean that we are to find a new worship song we don’t know and sing it to the Lord? That is not a bad thing to do, but that is not what he is saying. Simply the psalmist is saying we have a new reason to sing today for the Lord has done wonderful things. So, the new song is really speaking of new reasons to sing and praise God. God has and is doing so many things for the people of God that they should daily sing to the Lord for new reasons.
The psalmist also gives reasons why we should sing again and again songs of praise. One reason is for Jesus Christ who has gained the ultimate victory for us in granting to us salvation through His death and resurrection. God is also revealing this salvation to the nations each and every day. This gives us reasons to sing each day both individually and corporately when we gather bringing in different instruments to make a joyful noise to the Lord. The psalmist gives a picture that calls the whole earth from creation and all who dwell in it worshiping the Lord who will come again to judge all in truth and righteousness.
What reasons do you have today to praise the Lord? May the Lord continue to give you a new song to sing to Him. Look and see all that He is doing and worship Him for who He is and what He is doing.
