Bible Reading: 1 John 3.13-15

Do not be surprised, my brothers and sisters, if the world hates you. We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love each other. Anyone who does not love remains in death. Anyone who hates a brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in him. 1 John 3.13-15

John is calling believers to love one another. Our love for others is the mark of the transformation from death to life within our hearts. He has worked a miracle in us by His grace to take the hateful heart of stone and replace it with a graceful heart of love. John is saying that every Christian is to be characterized by love and righteousness. And that everyone who is related to God as His child is also related to other Christians as a brother or a sister. Therefore, it is impossible to be part of the family of God and not show love toward others in the family.

In a way, John offers us a check up; a chance to stop and evaluate our transformation from death to life. “Anyone who lacks love remains in death. Anyone who hates his brother is a murderer.” Think back over the last week or last month. Has Christ’s great love for you filled you with love for his people? How have you reacted to difficult situations or difficult people? This is not a call to try harder to show love; rather we need to rest in the sufficient love of Christ and trust Him to express love for others through us.
