Bible Reading: Proverbs 5.15-23

Drink water from your own cistern And fresh water from your own well. 16 Should your springs be dispersed abroad, Streams of water in the streets? 17 Let them be yours alone And not for strangers with you. 18 Let your fountain be blessed, And rejoice in the wife of your youth. 19 As a loving hind and a graceful doe, Let her breasts satisfy you at all times; Be exhilarated always with her love. 20 For why should you, my son, be exhilarated with an adulteress And embrace the bosom of a foreigner? 21 For the ways of a man are before the eyes of the Lord, And He watches all his paths. 22 His own iniquities will capture the wicked, And he will be held with the cords of his sin. 23 He will die for lack of instruction, And in the greatness of his folly he will go astray. Proverbs 5.15-23

We have heard it said before that “sex sells”.  Sadly that is true in our world.  We have seen the last few days and again from today’s reading that “sex outside of marriage kills”.

God has given sex as a joyful gift to the marriage bed alone (Hebrews 13.4).  Here Solomon speaks of the gift of sex and compares it with the picture of a cistern well or fountain.  The metaphor is used to show that the issue is private versus common property.  Your body is not just common property, but something private to be shared with your spouse alone.  The picture here describes a husband drinking from the cistern, which is his wife because she, like water satisfies desires.  Your body is not meant to be dispersed or scattered to others not your spouse.

Marriage and sex is to be enjoyed and celebrated.  Here sex in marriage is described as exhilarating.  God is not a cosmic kill-joy.  Instead He wants us to experience great pleasure and joy.  Outside of marriage sex will lead to great ruin.

The issue here is self-discipline.  Will we choose a stranger or our spouse?  The issue is not a “lack of instruction.”  People become unfaithful not because they do not know better, but because they do not choose better.  Those who choose their spouse will be blessed, but the one who chooses a stranger will do astray and experience destruction.

Husbands and wives, pursue each other in the area of sexual enjoyment for the glory of God.  It is God’s gift to marriage.  It is to be enjoyed!

Memory Verse: Watch over your heart with all diligence, for from it flow the springs of life.  Proverbs 4.23
