Matthew: The Simplicity of the Gospel

Series: Matthew's Gospel: The King and His Kingdom Topic: Gospel Passage: Matthew 19:13–19:15

In our text today we have simple story yet it is very powerful. When we think of the word “simple” it usually carries the idea of something basic and maybe even meaningless. But simplicity does not mean puny or powerless. The lever and pulley are very simple machines yet they are powerful in their concepts.

So, we have a simple yet powerful story that only takes 3 verses to tell. The characters are basic: those that brought the children to Jesus; the children themselves; and of course the disciples who wanted to send the kids away. Of course the main character in all Bible stories is Jesus and the kingdom of God. So, let’s focus on the main issue of this story - the simplicity of the gospel.

What is the gospel? The gospel is good news. It is the joyful announcement that God has reconciled us to Himself by sending Jesus to die as a substitute for our sins. So, that if I repent and believe this simple yet powerful good news, I will receive free salvation and eternal life. This is why we come to Jesus as humble children and are thankful to the ones who bring us! This is what the kingdom of heaven is all about.
