And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. John testified about Him and cried out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me has a higher rank than I, for He existed before me.’” For of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace. For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ. No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him. John 1.14-18

In C.S. Lewis’ writing, Prince Caspian, in The Chronicles of Narnia, Lucy says to Aslan, “You’re bigger”. Aslan answered, “That is because you are older, little one.” Lucy responded, “Not because you are?” Aslan responds, “I am not. But every year you grow, you will find me bigger.” May we find Christ to be even bigger in His greatness on this Christmas day, growing more in intimacy with Him, as we ever-increasingly become aware more and more of His greatness. So, today as we fix our eyes on Jesus, may we truly see His greatness in this most glorious text.

The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. The Word, Jesus, incarnates/infleshes God for us. Jesus, who was and is continuing to be God takes on a second nature, becoming human. He did not cease to be God, but was both God and Man. This is amazing love and grace as Jesus truly indentifies with us. As Skip Ryan says, That is what a person does when they make their home among people, they move in with them. He identifies with them. The incarnation is the moving in of the eternal Word, so that He utterly identifies with us in every way. He did such even beginning with birth. John uses the testimony of John the Baptist emphasizing that though Jesus came to dwell among us He came from the Father and is Eternal. How great Jesus is.

In Jesus the fullness of grace and truth is realized. The first grace was the law that was given through Moses, which revealed to us our sin and problem as man. Then the grace and truth realized in and
through Jesus, which is the solution to our problem. This is God’s great gifts to us in Jesus. How great Jesus is.

You have probably heard the story of the 4 year old boy, Johnny who was drawing a picture and his mom asked him, “Johnny, what are you drawing a picture of?” Johnny responded saying, “I am drawing a picture of God.” His mother said, “No one knows what God looks like Johnny.” And Johnny said, “They will when I am finished.” Johnny can’t obviously show us what God looks like through a drawing for no one has seen God. But Jesus has and He Himself explains God to us. Jesus has narrated Him, exegeted Him, for He reveals God supremely to us. How great Jesus is.
