The Coming of the Holy Spirit

Speaker: Jerry Witham Series: iWitness Topic: Holy Spirit Passage: Acts 2:1–13

Acts 2.1-13: Have you ever been in a tornado? The most recent and tragic tornados before the end of the year were definitely close and we have surely seen the destruction that is still a short distance away. I remember one time looking out my back door as a young child and seeing a little tornado way up in the sky over our house. It never got even close to the ground, but what a scene. Tornados can obviously be devastating at times. They can also leave behind some unique scenes. There was pictured in LIFE magazine years ago, a flimsy drinking straw thrusted through the center of a telephone pole, as a result of a Midwest Tornado. How could something so insubstantial do this? Simply put, the straw had no power of its own, but was totally empowered by the awesome force of the tornado to penetrate the pole. Is not that us? We are a lot like that straw. We are frail, fragile, small and weak people. But could something that seems as impossible be done in and through us? Could we be empowered to help accomplish the supernatural? Today’s scripture text reveals one of the most pivotal events to occur in history. We will see today how the Spirit came in a dramatic fashion to the disciples and empowered them in an unprecedented way to tell the mighty works of God. May we be desperate for the power of the Holy Spirit today.
