Matthew: The Willing and Anguishing Savior
Speaker: Jerry Witham Series: Matthew's Gospel: The King and His Kingdom Topic: Advent Passage: Matthew 26:36–26:56
Matthew 26.36-56: As we continue through Matthew’s gospel writing this Advent season we are encouraged to have a holy remembrance of the incarnation leading to the crucifixion. Today we see the great anguish of Jesus as Him and His disciples have broken away to the Garden of Gethsemane. It is here in Jesus’ prayers we find great truth again about the character of God, Jesus and the effects of the cross. This climatic moment in the life and mission of Jesus is surrounded once again with human failure and betrayal. As we saw the depravity of man around the table last week, we see it again today in the garden. The problem and penalty of sin is all around and is what brings Jesus willingly to this hour. May we desire the communion of the Father as Jesus does and hate sin as much as He does.
